DeepSeek thought for 19 seconds before answering the question, "Are you smarter than Gemini?" Then, it provided a whopper: DeepSeek believed it was ChatGPT.

This seemingly harmless error could be proof - a cigarette smoking weapon per se - that, yes, DeepSeek was trained on OpenAI models, as has been claimed by OpenAI, and that when pressed, it will dive back into that training to speak its fact.

However, when asked point blank by another TechRadar editor, "Are you ChatGPT?" it said it was not which it is "DeepSeek-V3, an AI assistant created exclusively by the Chinese Company DeepSeek."

Okay, sure, but in your rather prolonged reaction to me, you, DeepSeek, made numerous referrals to yourself as ChatGPT. I've included some screenshots listed below as proof:

Why would DeepSeek do that under any situations? Is it one of those AI hallucinations we like to discuss? Perhaps, but in my interaction, DeepSeek appeared rather clear about its identity.

I got to this line of questions, by the method, since I asked Gemini on my Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra if it's smarter than DeepSeek. The action was shockingly diplomatic, and when I asked for a simple yes or no response, it informed me, "It's not possible to offer an easy yes or no response. 'Smart' is too complex a concept to apply in that method to language models. They have different strengths and weak points."

I can't say I disagree. In reality, DeepSeek's response was quite comparable, other than it was not necessarily talking about itself.

This doesn't add up

I think I've been clear about my DeepSeek suspicion. Everyone says it's the most powerful and cheaply experienced AI ever (everybody other than Alibaba), but I don't understand if that's real. To be fair, there's an incredible amount of information on GitHub about DeekSeek's open-source LLMs. They at least appear to reveal that DeepSeek did the work.

But I do not think they expose how these models were trained. In any case, I do not have proof that DeepSeek trained its models on OpenAI or anyone else's large language models - or at least I didn't till today.
